This programme offers a modern education in the field of theory, practice and research in restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontology, and oral pathology. The programme is intended for those who actually do or plan to provide non-surgical treatment of oral diseases in Russia and globally, as well as take part in clinical trial and research in the field of therapeutic dentistry.
The programme is focused not only on domestic but also on foreign students. The programme provides the opportunity to combine the processes of education, research and clinical practice. The academic staff is actively involved in research work, which allows to introduce the latest developments into the educational process and involve students to conduct independent research to apply the acquired knowledge into practice.
Programme Coordinator:
Dr Inna Sokhova
Senior Lecturer of the Department of Dental Therapy at the Sechenov University
Working Languages:
Russian and English
Duration of the Programme:
2.5 academic years
Degree Awarded upon Completion:
Specialist in Dentistry
Cost of Attendance:
450 000 RUB (a year)
Course Content:
The duration of the Programme is 2.5 academic years, starting in September of year three and finishing in December of year five. It is a full-time study Programme which comprises four core subjects, two elective subjects and summer practice.
Dental caries and other diseases of tooth hard tissues
The module includes basic knowledge in disturbances of teeth development, dental caries and other diseases of tooth hard tissues. The main topics are as following:
Morphology and histology of teeth. Dental examination. Disturbances of teeth development and eruption: anodontia, supernumerary teeth, abnormalities of size and form of teeth, fluorosis, hypoplasia, hyperplasia, hereditary disorders of tooth development and eruption. Dental caries: etiology, diagnostics, non-invasive, minimally-invasive and conventional treatment. Dental restorative materials. Non-carious lesions of teeth: erosion, attrition, abrasion, abfraction, sensitive dentin, traumatic injuries of teeth. Teeth discoloration and dental bleaching.
Endodontics
The module covers the basics of endodotics and includes histology of pulp and periodontal ligament, endodontic anatomy of teeth, etiology of endodontic diseases, reversible an irreversible pulpitis, apical periodontitis, endodontic treatment including endodontic surgery, detection and correction of endodontic failures.
Modern endodontic technologies and materials are in focus: rotary, sonic and ultrasonic instruments, endodontic lasers, photo-activated disinfection of root canal system, iontophoresis.
Periodontology
The main issues of periodontology that are studied in this module: periodontium morphology, physiology and functions, etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, local and systemic predisposing factors. Inflammatory periodontal diseases: gingivitis, periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis. Congenital and hereditary periodontal diseases. Gingival recession: etiology, classification, clinical picture, differential diagnostics, management, surgical procedures.
Non-surgical and surgical treatment methods in periodontology. Local application of antibacterial solutions and gels. Systemic antibiotics intake. Flap surgery.
Diseases of oral mucosa
The module contains information about the oral mucosa morphology and histology as well as oral mucosa pathological processes and lesions. The following diseases of oral mucosa are studied:
physical and chemical trauma of oral mucosa; oral leukoplakia; viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in oral cavity; recurrent aphtous stomatitis. Potentially malignant oral lesions are highlighted. Also oral manifestations of systemic diseases are studied.
Elective Modules:
Esthetic restoration of teeth
This module introduces fundamental concepts of esthetic restoration of teeth. Different esthetic problems in dentistry are in focus:
discolorations, caries and non-carious lesions. Modern technologies in restorative dentistry are discussed: dental bleaching, direct and indirect veneers, and artificial crowns.
Attention is paid to direct restoration of teeth: adhesive systems, composite materials, wax-up and mock-up, use of layering technique for Black class I-VI cavities.
The module introduces the possibilities of biophysical technologies in diagnostics and management of oral diseases. The effects of different physical factors on human tissues are discussed. Modern technologies for early detection of pathological process are studied:
electric pulp test, transillumination, intra-oral current measurement, rheography, doppler flow meter, osteodensitometry, polarography, and fluorescent diagnostics.
The module also includes the following topics:
use of lasers for diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic purposes; use of iontophoresis for teeth fluoridation, endodontic treatment and non-surgical periodontal treatment; usage of ultrasound in dentistry.
