The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Sechenov University was first organized in 1885 on the basis of the department of the faculty surgical clinic of the medical faculty of Moscow University. The initiator of its creation is Professor N.V. Sklifosovsky.
The Master's program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a modern education in the field of theory, practice and research in reconstructive surgery, traumatology and inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial area. The program is designed for students who really want to become a professional in the field of maxillofacial surgery in Russia and around the world, as well as introduce effective methods of treating patients around the world.
The program is focused not only on domestic, but also on foreign students with a medical education. The faculty optimally combines research and educational processes. The academic staff is actively involved in research work, which allows to introduce the latest developments into the educational process and involve students to conduct independent scientific research to apply the acquired knowledge into practice.

Course Content:
The duration of the Programme is two academic years, starting in September of year one and finishing in June of year two.
It is a two-year full-time study including all types of in-class and individual work of a student, practice, research work and evaluation of knowledge.

Core Modules:
Inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region
General characteristics of inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region. Etiology, Pathogenesis. Diagnostics. Treatment of patients with inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region.

Injuries of the maxillоfacial region
Features of traumatic damage to the maxillofacial region. Clinic, diagnosis and treatment

Benign tumors of the maxillоfacial region
International classification of tumours. The modern concept of the emergence and development of tumors. Types of tumors OMF region. Clinic, diagnosis and treatment.

Reconstructive surgery
Goals and objectives of reconstructive surgery. Planning and preparation of patients for surgery. Theoretical and mathematical foundations of local tissue plastics. Free transplantation of tissues, complex flaps for microvascular anastomosis.

Elective Modules:
Dental implantology
Indications. Stages of planning and preparation for dental implant. Surgical protocols.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery
The purpose and objectives of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Operations planning. Types of defects and deformations of the maxillofacial area. Basic principles of reconstructive surgery of maxillofacial area. Free tissue transplantation. Types of transplants and implants.
The basic principles of planning and conducting reconstructive surgery on the upper jaw. Reconstructive surgery on the lower jaw. Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint.

Orthognathic surgery
Basic principles of planning and conducting surgical treatment for congenital and acquired deformities of the facial skull

Aesthetic facial surgery
Wrinkles on the face and neck. Blepharoplasty. Rhinoplasty. Face lift.

Research Project:
This course provides an overview of the research process including formulation of a research problem, conceptualization of the research design, construction of the instrument for data collection, selection of the sample, collection of data, processing of data, and writing the research report.
Topics include how to identify a research question and, correspondingly, how to formulate a clear, concise hypothesis or set of hypotheses; reasons and procedures for reviewing the literature; overview of observational and interventional research designs; review of measurement theory and commonly used measures in maxillofacial surgery research; data collection methods including survey and qualitative methods; and the ethical conduct of research. Through the introduction of these topics, the course provides a general background for individuals who are interested in clinical research.
