One dimensional (1D) nanostructures attract considerable attention, enabling a broad application owing to their unique properties. However, the precise mechanism of 1D morphology attainment remains a matter of debate. In this study, ultrafast picosecond (ps) laser-induced treatment on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is offered as a tool for 1D-nanostructures formation. Fragmentation, reshaping through recrystallization process and bioadaptation of initially hydrophobic (β-Na1.5Y1.5F6: Yb3+, Tm3+/β-Na1.5Y1.5F6) core/shell nanoparticles by means of one-step laser treatment in water are demonstrated. “True” 1D nanostructures through “Medusa”-like structures can be obtained, maintaining anti-Stokes luminescence functionalities. A matter of the one-dimensional UCNPs based on direction of energy migration processes is debated. The proposed laser treatment approach is suitable for fast UCNP surface modification and nano-to-nano transformation, that open unique opportunities to expand UCNP applications in industry and biomedicine. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd Coconut water (Cocos Nucifera) is shown to be a source of essential elements present in the form of low-molecular weight stable complexes known for their bio-availability. The total element concentrations were in the range of 0.2–2.7, 0.3–1, 3–14 and 0.5–2 ppm for Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn, respectively, and varied as a function of the origin of the nut and its maturity. Speciation was investigated by size-exclusion chromatography - inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS), and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) - electrospray-Orbitrap MS. The metal species identified included: iron complexes with citrate and malate: FeIII(Cit)3(Mal), FeIII(Cit)2(Mal)2, FeIII(Mal)2, glutamine: FeIII(Glu)2 and nicotianamine: FeII(NA); copper complexes with phenylanine: CuII(Phe)2 and CuII(Phe)3 and nicotianamine: CuII(NA); zinc complexes with citrate: ZnII(Cit)2 and nicotianamine ZnII(NA) and manganese complex with asparagine MnII(Asp)2. The contributions of the individual species to the total elements concentrations could be estimated by HILIC – ICP MS.

Emicizumab is a humanized bispecific antibody, which mimics the function of coagulation factor VIII (FVIII), and it has been approved for prophylaxis in hemophilia A. Methods: This is the first study assessing the potential future role of emicizumab as an alternative prophylactic treatment in patients with severe VWD, based upon a thrombin generation (TG) ex vivo analysis. We report 51 weeks of successful off label emicizumab prophylaxis in a child with severe VWD and recurrent hemarthroses and progressive arthropathy despite adherence to previous prophylaxis with replacement therapy. Results and conclusions: Our work demonstrated that ex vivo spiking with emicizumab increased TG in plasma from patients with type 3 VWD. Similar TG results were observed in our treated patient, whose therapy was well tolerated without any adverse events. Both in vitro and ex vivo TG data support sufficient hemostasis without exceeding the range seen in healthy volunteers. Further collaborative studies on the efficacy and safety of emicizumab prophylaxis in severe VWD is warranted.

© 2020 The development of critical thinking is a fundamental task of the modern education system. However, practically, it turns out that a number of teachers are not competent enough in this area. The purpose of the study is to identify the most universal and valid methods for the dynamic assessment of the level of critical thinking in children. There are also difficulties associated with the assessment of the level of critical thinking, the selection of valid methods for its study, especially when it comes to preschool or primary school children. The participants (186 children 6–8 years ages from 3 schools of Moscow (Russian Federation) in the group of gifted children did not fall into the groups with a low development of critical thinking, and the participants in the control group did not fall into the group with the highest or the highest level of development of critical thinking. In two tests, the data for the gifted and control groups showed high correlation values between the definition of giftedness and the level of critical thinking development (0.958 and 0.962 in the static test and 0.659 and 0.908 in the dynamic test, respectively). Therefore, it is relevant to select valid methods that would allow the assessment of critical thinking as one of the criteria for the giftedness of a child in dynamics, that is, in the process of developmental learning. During the research such methods were used – sculpture method, absurdity method, verbal fantasy method, drawing method, think of a game method. The research results have shown that giftedness has a psychophysiological basis, the described test methods are valid and can be used for the assessment of the level of critical thinking and the quality of the educational process.

We have illustrated the surgical anatomy through cadaveric dissections and provided an extensive review of the literature to highlight the versatility of this approach, its limits, and comparisons with alternative approaches. Methods: The surgical anatomy of the ELSI has been described using 1 adult-injected cadaveric head. Formalized noninjected brain specimens were also dissected to describe the brain parenchymal anatomy of the region. An extensive review of the literature was performed according to each targeted anatomical region. Illustrative cases are also presented. Results: The ELSI approach allows for wide exposure of the middle and posterolateral incisural spaces with direct access to centrally located intra-axial structures such as the splenium, pulvinar, brainstem, and mesial temporal lobe. In addition, for skull base extra-axial tumors such as petroclival meningiomas, the ELSI approach represents a rapid and adequate method of access without the use of extensive skull base approaches. Conclusions: The ELSI approach represents one of the most versatile approaches with respect to its ability to address several anatomical regions centered at the posterior and middle incisural spaces. For intra-axial pathologies, the approach allows for access to the central core of the brain with several advantages compared with alternate approaches that frequently involve significant brain retraction and cortical incisions. In specific cases of skull base lesions, the ELSI approach is an elegant alternative to traditionally used skull base approaches, thereby avoiding approach-related morbidity.

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd The objective was to state zinc contribution in the effectiveness of novel zinc-doped dentin cements to achieve dentin remineralization, throughout a literature or narrative exploratory review. Literature search was conducted using electronic databases, such as PubMed, MEDLINE, DIMDI, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science. Both zinc-doping silicate and hydroxyapatite-based cements provoked an increase of both bioactivity and intrafibrillar mineralization of dentin. Zinc-doped hydroxyapatite-based cements (oxipatite) also induced an increase in values of dentin nano-hardness, Young's modulus and dentin resistance to deformation. From Raman analyses, it was stated higher intensity of phosphate peaks and crystallinity as markers of dentin calcification, in the presence of zinc. Zinc-based salt formations produced low microleakage and permeability values with hermetically sealed tubules at radicular dentin. Dentin treated with oxipatite attained preferred crystal grain orientation with polycrystalline lattices. Thereby, oxipatite mechanically reinforced dentin structure, by remineralization. Dentin treated with oxipatite produced immature crystallites formations, accounting for high hydroxyapatite solubility, instability and enhanced remineralizing activity.

A virtual element discretisation for the numerical approximation of the three-field formulation of linear poroelasticity introduced in R. Oyarzúa and R. Ruiz-Baier, (SIAM J. Numer. Anal.54 2951–2973, 2016) is proposed. The treatment is extended to include also the transient case. Appropriate poroelasticity projector operators are introduced and they assist in deriving energy bounds for the time-dependent discrete problem. Under standard assumptions on the computational domain, optimal a priori error estimates are established. These estimates are valid independently of the values assumed by the dilation modulus and the specific storage coefficient, implying that the formulation is locking-free. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method is verified numerically through a set of computational tests.

For thermoelements operating on the Peltier and Seebeck effects, including multisection ones used at temperatures up to 900 K, the physicochemical principles of creating effective thin-film multilayer contact systems obtained by magnetron ion-plasma sputtering have been developed. The formation of contact systems was carried out on thermoelectric materials based on: Bi2Te3; Sb2Te3; PbTe; GeTe with the increased thermoelectric figure of merit. A structure of contact systems consisting of contact layers providing ohmic contact, adhesion, barrier and interconnection properties of contact systems is proposed and justified. The selection criteria for materials of contact layers are substantiated. For multisection thermoelements operating on the Seebeck effect at temperatures above 500 K, the necessity of introducing diffusion-barrier layers into the structure of contact systems providing reliability and invariability of the properties of contact systems is substantiated. Based on the physicochemical analysis, the thermodynamic and kinetic factors of the stability and degradation of diffusion-barrier layers are determined. The influence of methods for preparing the surface of thermoelectric materials on the adhesion, contact resistance, and thermal stability of contact systems is established. Using Auger electron spectroscopy, the analysis of the causes of thermal stability and degradation of contact systems was carried out. The deposition modes were determined. The effective contact systems were obtained and investigated. The respective systems are based on: Ni; Mo/Ni and Ni/(Ta–W–N)/Ni having the adhesive strength of more than 12 MPa; the contact resistance not exceeding 10−9 Ω m2 and thermal stability at temperatures up to 900 K.

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) are crucial for the peripheral and central nervous system development, respectively, and differential brain and blood levels in Intra Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and prematurity have been found. As reduced growth of brain regions, measured at 30−40 days of postnatal period, has been demonstrated in preterm and IUGR neonates who showed impaired neuro-development at two years of age, in this study, the levels of NGF and BDNF were evaluated in the urine samples of 30−40 day-old subjects who were full-term, preterm and IUGR and showed a normal or an abnormal neuro-development at follow up after two years. Neurotrophins were measured concurrently with volumes of whole brain, thalamus, frontal cortex and cerebellum. Values were then correlated with later neuro-developmental outcome. Biochemical parameters and cerebral volumes were assessed using colorimetric ELISA kits and three-dimensional ultra-sonography (3DUS), respectively. Neuro-development was estimated using the Griffiths-II test. Urinary NGF and brain volumes significantly correlated and were lower in preterm and IUGR subjects characterized by poor neuro-development. No differences were seen in the case of BDNF. The present investigation demonstrates, for the first time, the strong and direct association of NGF with brain growth at the initial phase of the postnatal period and with neuro-developmental outcome in later life. Remarkably, urinary NGF may be suggested as an early prognostic indicator of high long-term risk of motor and cognitive impairment in IUGR and preterm neonates.

© 2020 Microcapsules are ideal cargo platform for variety of applications such as drug delivery, sensing and imaging due to the combination of a simplicity fabrication and flexibility in the design. We developed remotely collapsing polymer capsules to response to external microwave treatment. The multilayer structure of the capsules was designed to create a polyfunctional system intercalating with nanodiamonds (NDs) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) into the polyelectrolyte shell. NDs empower local overheating to the microcapsules, while UCNPs provide opportunity to luminescent thermal sensing. UCNPs consist of inorganic crystalline host matrix - hexagonal β-phase NaYF4, doped with pairs of trivalent lanthanide ions, which play role of sensitizer (Yb3+) and activator (Er3+). The microwave triggering followed by the capsule heating results in the controlled destruction of the polyelectrolyte shell with subsequent cargo release. UCNPs luminescence was utilized to determine the local temperature of the capsule shell at nanoscale under GHz ultrasonic treatment. Our novel approach provides on demand microcapsule system destruction, which can be used in the development of nanotheranostic platform for the unification of diagnosis and treatment of various diseases.

In particular, the scarcity of drinking water has prompted the investigation of several physico-chemical treatments, and synergistic effects have been observed in hyphenated techniques. Herein, we report the first example of water treatment under simultaneous hydrodynamic cavitation and plasma discharge with the intense generation of radicals, UV light, shock waves and charged particles. This highly reactive environment is well suited to the bulk treatment of polluted water (i.e. E. coli disinfection and organic pollutant degradation). We have developed a new prototype and have efficiently applied this hybrid technology to water disinfection and the complete degradation of methanol in water with the aim of demonstrating its scalability. We have analyzed the mechanisms of water disinfection under the abovementioned conditions and verified them by measuring cavitation noise spectra and plasma emission spectra. We have also used the degradation of textile dyes and methanol solutions as an indicator for the formation of radicals.
