Single phase barium titanate–bismuth ferrite ((1-x)BaTiO3-(x)BiFeO3, BTO-BFO) solid solutions were prepared using citric acid and ethylene glycol assisted sol-gel synthesis method. Depending on the dopant content the samples are characterized by tetragonal, tetragonal-pseudocubic, pseudocubic and rhombohedral structure as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. An increase of the BFO content leads to a reduction in the cell parameters accompanied by a decrease in polar distortion of the unit cell wherein an average particle size increases from 60 up to 350 nm. Non zero piezoresponse was observed in the compounds with pseudocubic structure while no polar distortion was detected in their crystal structure using X-ray diffraction method. The origin of the observed non-negligible piezoresponse was discussed assuming a coexistence of nanoscale polar and non-polar phases attributed to the solid solutions with high BFO content. A coexistence of the nanoscale regions having polar and non-polar character is considered as a key factor to increase macroscopic piezoresponse in the related compounds due to increased mobility of the domain walls and phase boundaries.

We report four types of organization of the BC mass, produced by Gluconacetobacter hansenii that occur depending on cultivation conditions. Two of those, particularly, plywood type one and layers of micro-sized tubes were observed and described for the first time. In spherical BC particles (pellets), we found the layered structure that had previously been reported for planar geometry only. We suggest a model explaining why layers form in BC films and attempt to reveal the impact of different factors on the BC microscale morphology. We assume that the main factor that has direct impact on the type of structure formed is the rate of BC mass accumulation.

© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background: Despite advances in treatment, the recurrence rates for laryngeal cancer range from 16% to 40%. Methods: Patients with recurrent laryngeal cancer treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) from 1999 to 2016 were reviewed. Survival outcomes were analyzed. Results: Of 241 patients, 88% were male; the median age was 67 years; 71% had primary glottic tumors. At initial treatment, 72% of patients were seen with early stage disease; primary treatment was radiation (68%), chemoradiation (29%), and surgery (3%). The most common salvage surgery was total laryngectomy (74%). Forty-seven percentage were upstaged at salvage surgery. The 2- and 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS) was 74% and 57%, respectively. Patients with cT4 disease treated with nonsurgical primary management had a 0% 5-year DSS. Independent predictors of DSS were tumor location, perineural invasion, margin, and stage. Conclusions: Salvage surgery results in acceptable oncologic outcomes. Stage, disease site, perineural invasion, and margins are associated with inferior DSS.

© 2019 He et al. Current understanding of flagellum/cilium length regulation focuses on a few model organisms with flagella of uniform length. Leptomonas pyrrhocoris is a monoxenous trypanosomatid parasite of firebugs. When cultivated in vitro, L. pyrrhocoris duplicates every 4.2 ± 0.2 h, representing the shortest doubling time reported for trypanosomatids so far. Each L. pyrrhocoris cell starts its cell cycle with a single flagellum. A new flagellum is assembled de novo, while the old flagellum persists throughout the cell cycle. The flagella in an asynchronous L. pyrrhocoris population exhibited a vast length variation of ∼3 to 24 μm, casting doubt on the presence of a length regulation mechanism based on a single balance point between the assembly and disassembly rate in these cells. Through imaging of live L. pyrrhocoris cells, a rapid, partial disassembly of the existing, old flagellum is observed upon, if not prior to, the initial assembly of a new flagellum. Mathematical modeling demonstrated an inverse correlation between the flagellar growth rate and flagellar length and inferred the presence of distinct, cell cycle-dependent disassembly mechanisms with different rates. On the basis of these observations, we proposed a min-max model that could account for the vast flagellar length range observed for asynchronous L. pyrrhocoris. This model may also apply to other flagellated organisms with flagellar length variation. IMPORTANCE Current understanding of flagellum biogenesis during the cell cycle in trypanosomatids is limited to a few pathogenic species, including Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania spp. The most notable characteristics of trypanosomatid flagella studied so far are the extreme stability and lack of ciliary disassembly/absorption during the cell cycle. This is different from cilia in Chlamydomonas and mammalian cells, which undergo complete absorption prior to cell cycle initiation. In this study, we examined flagellum duplication during the cell cycle of Leptomonas pyrrhocoris. With the shortest duplication time documented for all Trypanosomatidae and its amenability to culture on agarose gel with limited mobility, we were able to image these cells through the cell cycle. Rapid, cell cycle-specific flagellum disassembly different from turnover was observed for the first time in trypanosomatids. Given the observed length-dependent growth rate and the presence of different disassembly mechanisms, we proposed a min-max model that can account for the flagellar length variation observed in L. pyrrhocoris.

ECM-based hydrogels can be of animal or human origin. The use of human tissues as a source for ECM hydrogels in the clinical setting is still in its infancy and current literature is scant and anecdotal, resulting in inconclusive results.SummaryThus far the methods used to obtain hydrogels from human tissues remains a work in progress. Gelation, the most complex technique in obtaining hydrogels, is challenging due to remarkable heterogeneity of the tissues secondary to interindividual variability. Age, sex, ethnicity, and preexisting conditions are factors that dramatically undermine the technical feasibility of the gelation process. This is contrasted with animals whose well defined anatomical and histological characteristics have been selectively bred for the goal of manufacturing hydrogels.

© 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. Abstract: Histone-like protein HU is a dimeric nucleoid-associated protein (NAP). HU is the most conserved NAP. It binds nonspecifically to duplex DNA with a preference for targeting nicked and bent DNA. HU limits the architecture of the bacterial nucleoid and its deletion is lethal for Bacillus subtilis and Mycoplasma genitalium which do not contain other NAPs. E. coli lacking HU is viable but has numerous growth defects. The effects of the HU protein on gene expression is known from microarray analysis and HU regulons were identified. In HU-deficient E. coli, absence of this DNA architectural protein causes a disorder in gene regulation; on the other hand, E. coli growth under standard conditions is almost unaltered in the absence of HU. To understand how the bacterium confronts the chromosomal disorder, we performed proteome analysis to compare protein abundances in cells containing the HU protein or not. Comparison of the proteomic profile of wild-type and HU-deficient E. coli shows how the altered gene expression influences the protein content. We show that proteome profile changes are very similar to the gene expression profile changes in HU-deficient E. coli. Several exceptions show that proteome studies are very important.

Purpose: To assess the accuracy of [68Ga]-PSMA-11 PET/CT or [68Ga]-PSMA-11 PET/MRI (PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI)) for lymph node (LN) staging using salvage LN dissection (SLND) in patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical prostatectomy (RP). Patients and methods: In a prospective study, 65 consecutive patients who developed BCR after RP underwent SLND after PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) between 2014 and 2018. Extended SLND up to the inferior mesenteric artery was performed in all patients. Regional and template-based correlations between the presence of LN metastases on histopathology and whole-body PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) results were evaluated. The diagnostic accuracy of PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) was also evaluated in relation to PSA level at the time of SLND. Results: The median age of the patients at the time of SLND was 65 years (IQR 63–69 years) and the median PSA level was 1.4 ng/ml (IQR 0.8–2.9 ng/ml). Before SLND, 50 patients (77%) had additional therapy after RP (26.2% androgen-deprivation therapy and 50.8% radiotherapy). The median number of LNs removed on SLND was 40 (IQR 33–48) and the median number of positive nodes was 4 (IQR 2–6). LN metastases were seen in 13.8% of resected LNs (317 of 2,292). LNs positive on PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) had a median diameter of 7.2 mm (IQR 5.3–9 mm). Metastatic LNs in regions negative on PSMA-11 PET had a median diameter of 3.4 mm (IQR 2.1–5.4 mm). In a regional analysis, the sensitivity of PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) ranged from 72% to 100%, and the specificity from 96% to 100%. Region-specific positive and negative predictive values ranged from 95% to 100% and 93% to 100%, respectively. Conclusion: PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) has a very good performance for the identification of LN metastases in patients with BCR after RP. The high diagnostic accuracy in the regional and subregional analyses demonstrates the potential of this approach to enable a region-directed instead of a complete bilateral therapeutic intervention. The performance of PSMA-11 PET/CT(MRI) is dependent on the PSA level and the size of the metastatic deposit.

The physicochemical and technological properties of an interpolymer complex of polymethyacrylic acid and polyethylene glycol, known under its commercial name “Polymer Carrier Composition” (FGUP Science Research Institute of Polymers, Russia), were studied. This polymer is an excipient substance used in the technology of solid dosage forms as a matrix former and as a film-forming agent for making long-acting and slow-release formulations. With the aim of widening the potential uses of the polymer carrier composition, the solubility of the polymer in aqueous solutions and organic solvents was studied, along with the technological and surfactant properties of the polymer; the critical gel-forming concentration was also determined. Experimental samples of tablets and oral gels of model substances with similar physicochemical properties were prepared, based on different concentrations of the Polymer Carrier Composition, and the technological, rheological, and biopharmaceutical properties of these were studied. The potential for using the polymer in both hard and soft dosage forms to obtain prolonged-release medicinal formulations is demonstrated.

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Upconversion Sr2(Gd.98-xEr.02Ybx)8Si6O26 (SGSO:2Er3+/xYb3+) phosphor materials were synthesized using a citrate sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed their hexagonal structure. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images of SGSO:2Er3+/xYb3+ phosphors depicted submicron particles. The enhanced upconversion luminescence properties of SGSO:2Er3+/xYb3+ phosphors were analysed as a function of Yb3+ ion concentration and laser power. The energy transfer induced enhanced emission of the Er3+/ Yb3+ ions co-doped SGSO phosphors was ascribed to multi-phonon relaxation. The calculated chromaticity coordinates of the SGSO:2Er3+/xYb3+ phosphors showed emissions could be tuned by changing Yb3+ ion concentration. Optimized sample exhibited the chromaticity coordinate values near to the ultra-high definition television standard green emission coordinates.

Francisella T6CC and some undeterminated products of pathogenicity island's genes take part in such processes. Shigella T3CC and autotransporter protein IscA provide this processes together with spreading bacteria intra colonic epithelium.

In most cases, the studies employed different methods to determine the gross (total) composition of chemical elements and their concentrations in the examined samples. Less frequently, they included an assessment of the distribution of chemical elements in the lens and correlation of their concentration with its morphological changes. Chemical elements from all groups (series) of the periodic classification system were discovered in the lens substance. Despite similar investigation methods, different authors obtained contradicting results on the chemical composition of the lens. This article presents data suggesting possible correlation between inorganic chemical elements in the lens substance with the development and formation of lenticular opacities. All currently employed methods are known to only analyze limited number of select chemical elements in the tissues and do not consider the whole range of elements that can be analyzed with existing technology; furthermore, the majority of studies are conducted on the animal model lens. Therefore, it is feasible to continue the development of the chemical microanalysis method by increasing the sensitivity of Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) with the purpose of assessing the gross chemical composition and distribution of the elements in the lens substance, as well as revealing possible correlation between element concentration and morphological changes in the lens.
